CAF Modify 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations dates
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has modified the dates for the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to take place in Egypt.
Anthony Baffoe, the CAF Deputy Secretary General communicated the changes on Monday in a circular to all national Associations in Africa.
“During it’s meeting held in Cairo on the 26th of January 2019, CAF Emergency Committee decided to validate the new dates of the tournament of the Total Africa Cup of Nations – Egypt 2019 as requested by the host country inorder to start 21st of June 2019 until 19th of July 2019,” said the communication.
He also stated that drawing of lots for the tournament will take place April 12th in Cairo. The earlier dates for the 2019 AFCON were 15th June 2019 to 13th July.
Cameroon was stripped off the hosting rights because of inability to put together infrastructure in time and also due to security threats in parts of the country.
On January 8th Egypt was announced hosts after beating South Africa to the bid. It will be the first time the AFCON features 24 teams from the previous 16.
South Sudan who are bottom of Group C in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers having lost all the five matches will face Mali away on March 22nd in their last game.
