The Secretary General of the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa), Nicholas Musonye has revealed that the 2019 Kagame Club Championship will not be moved from July.
Musonye said on Thursday that moving the tournament from July will mean having no space in the year to stage it. “Rwanda is ready to host the Championship in July and we shall go ahead and have it,” he added.
The development comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) set the dates for the 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in July and yet it was the same period Cecafa had picked for the Kagame Cup.
South Sudan will face Uganda in the first round of the 2020 CHAN qualifiers.
“We allocated July for the Kagame Cup before CAF picked dates and we cannot change now,” added Msusonye. The Cecafa Kagame Club is played between the League leaders in the respective Cecafa member countries.
Besides the Kagame Cup, the other tournament planned for the year include the Senior Challenge Cup, Cecafa Women’s Championship, Cecafa U-17 Girls Championship, Cecafa Boys U-20 Championship and Cecafa Boys U-17 Championship.
