Cecafa U-15 tournament launched in Eritrea
The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) will stage the U-15 Championship August 17th to September 1st in Asmara, Eritrea.
Cecafa launched the Under 15 football tournament in Asmara last week. Nicholas Musonye, the secretary General of the regional body said the inaugural tournament will be attended by all members.
Eritrea last hosted a Cecafa event in 2010 on the occasion of the 2010 Under 20 Challenge Cup.
Musonye said the event to be sponsored by FIFA Forward Programme initiative will be the first Under 15 tournament to be staged in Africa. He said the tournament will help the region prepare for the Under 17 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers that start early next year.
The initiative to launch the 15 event has been backed by CAF President Ahmad Ahmad who attended the CECAFA meeting in Dar es Salaam last month.
Francis Amin Michael, President of the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) said they will be happy to participate in the U-15 Championship. “We shall prepare our U-15 team well enough ahead of the tournament,” added Amin.
