Cecafa confirms 2019 Kagame Cup
The Council of East and Central Africa Associations (Cecafa) has confirmed that the regional Kagame Club Championship will take place July 7-21st in Kigali, Rwanda.
Nicholas Musonye, general Secretary of the regional body said on Wednesday that this was the best timing for Cecafa because of the many other engagements on the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) calendar.
“This is a very good platform for our clubs in the region to test themselves before the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup that begin in August. “Even some of these players will be engaged in the first round of the 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship qualifiers in late July,” he added.
The tournament is partly bankrolled by the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame who caters for the prize money totaling US$60,000.
Rwanda last staged the championship in 2014 with the home side APR FC losing to Sudan’s El Merreikh 1-0 in the final in Kigali.
Tanzania hosted the tournament in July 2018 with Azam winning 2-1 against Simba SC in an all Tanzanian final to record their second title on the bounce.
Champions of the on-going South Sudan Club Champions League will have the chance to feature in the tournament. Uganda will be represented by KCCA FC, Gor Mahia (Kenya) and Rayon Sport (Rwanda). Some of the Leagues in the region are yet to be completed.
