Atlabara FC to face African giants TP Mazembe in regional Kagame Cup
South Sudan League champions Atlabara FC have been grouped alongside African giants from DR Congo TP Mazembe in the regional 2019 CECAFA Kagame Cup.
The tournament will take place July 6-21 in the towns of Rubavu, Huye and Kigali.
In the draws conducted by the Secretary general of the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), Nicholas Musonye in Kigali on Friday Group A will have Atlabara FC, TP Mazembe, KMC FC and Rwanda’s Rayon Sport FC.
The South Sudan League Champions Atlabara FC only confirmed participation two days ago. “They sent the confirmation late and we have had to consider them,” said Musonye.
The CECAFA Kagame Cup defending champions Azam FC from Tanzania will tussle it out against Mukura FC (Rwanda), Bandari FC (Kenya) and Uganda Premier League champions KCCA FC are placed in Group C, while Gor Mahia FC (Kenya), DC Motema Pembe (DR Congo), KMKM and AS Ports FC (Djibouti) are in Group D.
“We are happy to have 16 teams taking part in this year’s event with some as guests from DR Congo and Zambia. This tournament will help our teams prepare better for the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup,” added Musonye. He said although the fixtures will be released next week, two teams from each group will advance to the quarter finals.
GROUP A: Rayon Sports (Rwanda), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), KMC (Tanzania), Atlabara (South Sudan) – Kigali
GROUP B: Azam (Tanzania) Mukura FC(Rwanda), Bandari (Kenya), KCCA FC (Uganda) – Huye
GROUP C: APR (Rwanda), Green Buffaloes (Zambia), Proline (Uganda), Heegan (Somalia) – Kigali
GROUP D: Gor Mahia (Kenya), DC Motema Pembe (DR Congo), KMKM ( Zanzibar), AS Ports (Djibouti) – Rubavu.
