South
Sudan’s new coach Cyprian Besong Ashu has said his team still has the chance to
make it to the next round of the 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN)
qualifiers.
The Bright
Star lost 2-0 last Saturday away to Burundi in the first leg of the first round
in a match played in Bujumbura.
“We made
some mistakes that cost us and we must rectify them ahead of the return leg on
Sunday. We still have a chance,” said Ashu. The Bright Star will host Burundi
in the return leg on August 4th at the Star Times Stadium in
Kampala.
The South
Sudan Football Association (SSFA) opted to have the home matches played in
Kampala because the Juba Stadium is under renovation.
Victory for
the Bright Star past the first round will see them face the winner between
Uganda Cranes and Somalia in the last phase of the qualifiers. Uganda beat
Somalia 3-1 away in the first leg.
In the other matches played in the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) region Ethiopia beat Djibouti 1-0, while Kenya held Tanzania to a goalless draw.
The CHAN
tournament is played by locally based players playing in the domestic leagues
of the respective countries. Morocco are the defending champions.
