Equatorial Guinea coach Lopez warns
Head coach of Equatorial Guinea’s national football team, Angel Lopez has warned that they will be all out to pick a win against South Sudan on Wednesday.
The two sides will face off in the first leg of the preliminary round of the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers at the Al Hilal Stadium.
“We know it is very important to get a good result away from home and we are determined to win,” said the Equatorial Guinea coach. He made it clear that they will approach the game like a Cup final so that they make it easy in the return leg at home.
The team will however miss experienced centre back Rui da Gracia Gomes, 34 who was dropped and midfielder Carlos Martin Briones.
But the team includes 16-year-old striker Luis Miguel Nlavo who featured and scored in both legs of their 5-4 aggregate win over Chad in the 2020 Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.
But South Sudan coach Ashu Cyprian Besong has also made it clear his team is determined to get a win ahead of the return leg in Malabo. “We must go and take our chances. Playing Equatorial Guinea is a tough one because their style of play is different. But we must stick to our style and be very disciplined,” added Besong.
The winners between South Sudan and Equatorial Guinea over two legs will advance to the group stage where they will be drawn in with the 26 top-ranked countries given a bye into the second round.
