FIFA World Cup 2022: South Sudan fight back to hold Equatorial Guinea 1-1
South Sudan’s national football team, Bright Star fought back gallantly to hold Equatorial Guinea to a 1-all draw in a FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers.
The game played this afternoon at the Al Hilal Stadium in Khartoum was the first leg of the preliminary round of the qualifiers.
Under new coach Ashu Cyprian Besong, the Bright Star played with cautious defending deep as they tried to capitalize on counter attacks.
The visitors took the lead after 34 minutes when a defensive lapse gave Luis Meseguer chance to slot the ball past South Sudan’s goalkeeper.
But the Bright Star did not give up as they returned to fight back in the second half closing spaces and giving the visitors no space. Later an own goal by Niko Kata was enough to see Bright Star earn a draw.
The second return leg will take place in Malabo on September 8thh. In the other games played on Wednesday Tanzania held Burundi to a 1-1 draw in Bujumbura, while Eritrea lost 2-1 at home while Djibouti picked a 2-1 home win over Eswatini.
The winner between South Sudan and Equatorial Guinea over two legs will advance to the group stage where they will be drawn in with the 26 top-ranked countries given a bye into the second round.
