CECAFA U-20 CHALLENGE CUP: Painful Lam Chan own goal sinks South Sudan

South Sudan put up a spirited fight but lost 1-0 to Sudan in a quarter final match played in Gulu Town at the on-going Cecafa U-20 Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Coach Simon James Yor’s team played their hearts out but missed a penalty and scored an own goal to exit the regional tournament.

After a goalless first half skipper Daniel Samuel Solong should have given South Sudan the lead from the spot, but his attempt was saved by Sudan’s goalkeeper after 60 minutes.

With less than five minutes to the final whistle Buay Lam Chan netted an own goal that helped Sudan progress to the semi final stage.

“We were very unlucky today because we had the chance to win the game and instead conceded a n own goal. But I think the tournament has been good exposure for my players,” said South Sudan’s coach after the game.

In another quarter final tie Kenya’s Raising Stars beat Burundi 2-1 at the Fufa Technical center in Njeru.

Burundi took the lead through a goal by skipper Hamimu Hakiziman after 45 minutes. But Patrick Otieno and Benson Oluoch Ochieng netted second half goals to make sure Kenya progress.

Eritrea also progressed after a 5-0 victory over Zanzibar, while Tanzania shocked hosts Uganda 4-2.

The semi finals will be played on October 2nd, while the play-off for third place and final will be played on October 5th in Gulu.
