2021 AFCON QUALIFIERS: South Sudan stop Seychelles to qualify for group stage
South Sudan’s Bright Star have qualified for the group stage of the 2021 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.
Joseph Kuch Nyuar who also scored in the first leg made sure the Bright Star re-write history scoring the only goal in the 1-0 away win over the hosts Seychelles in Victoria on Sunday in the return leg of the preliminary round of the qualifiers.
After a tense first half that ended goalless, head coach Cyprian Ashu pushed his players forward and the tactical switch paid off with Kuch scoring after 71 minutes to silence the home fans.
South Sudan qualified on a 3-1 goal aggregate to join Burkina Faso, Uganda and Malawi in Group B of the group stage of the qualifiers that start next month.
“I am very happy that we have achieved our goal of making it to the group stage of the qualifiers. But again we must work hard going forward,” said coach Ashu who recorded his second win with the team since taking over few months ago.
Francis Amin Michael, the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) President who was in the stands to support the Bright Star said this is the beginning of more success to come for football in South Sudan.
The technical team will now return to prepare the team ahead of their first match in the group stage away to Malawi on November 11th. The Bright Star will later hosts Burkina Faso on November 19th.
