Hosts Tanzania defeat South Sudan in Cecafa Senior Women’s Challenge Cup
South Sudan’s national team got a rude welcome to the 2019 Cecafa Senior Women’s Challenge Cup falling 9-0 to defending champions Tanzania on Saturday.
The hosts took a 3-0 half time lead at the Chamanzi Stadium with Omary Mwanahamisi netting a brace and Donisia Minja scoring the other.
South Sudan who were making their first appearance in a women’s tournament tried to restrict the hosts to few goals with tight defending.
But the Tanzania team returned to attack in numbers as Mwanshamisi netted another before Abdallah Stumai and Clement Opa scored a brace each, while Julitha Tamuwahi also got her name on the score sheet.
“It was a very difficult game for us because it is the first time we are competing in a women’s tournament. But this exposure is good for the women’s team,” said South Sudan’s coach Moses Machar Akol.
Tanzania now lead Group A with three points and a better goal difference than Burundi who beat Zanzibar 5-0 in an earlier game.
Action continues on Sunday with Group B matches as Ethiopia take on Kenya before Uganda Crested Cranes face Djibouti.
