Bright Star suffer defeat in 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship qualifier

South Sudan’s Bright Star put up a spirited performance but lost 2-0 away to Burundi on Saturday in the first leg of the 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier.

After a goalless first half with the Bright Star players defending well, the hosts returned in the second half to score through Olivier Dusabe and Jospin Nshimirimana.

“We need to get back to the drawing board and prepare for the return leg,” said Bright Star’s new coach Cyprian Besong Ashu. The return leg will be played on August 4th at the StarTimes Stadium in Kampala.

The South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) opted to have the home matches played in Kampala because the Juba Stadium is under renovation.

In-case South Sudan eject Burundi they will face the winner between Uganda Cranes and Somalia. Uganda picked an away 3-1 win against Somalia on Saturday in a game played at the Al Haji Hassan Guled Stadium in Djibouti.

The CHAN tournament is played by locally based players playing in the domestic leagues of the respective countries. Morocco are the defending champions.
