CECAFA U-20 CHALLENGE CUP: Lual Gumnok scores hat-trick in Burundi draw

Striker Dani Lual Gumnok showed good form scoring a hat-trick as South Sudan settled for a 3-all draw against Burundi in a Group C match at the on-going Cecafa U-20 Challenge Cup in Uganda.

Played in-front of a small crowd at the Fufa Technical centre Stadium on Saturday Gumnok gave South Sudan the lead after 13 minutes with a fine strike past Burundi’s goalkeeper Juma Nijimbere.

The Burundi team captained by Haminu Hakizimana tried to fight back strongly missing some good scoring opportunities. But before the break Yassin Dushime made it 1-1 going into the interval.

In the second half Gumnok again gave the Burundian defenders no chance when he reacted quickly to make it 2-1 for South Sudan. But a defensive blunder in the box gave Burundi chance to convert a penalty through Karim Niyonkuru.

A determined South Sudan team continued to push forward and Gumnok restored the lead. But a defensive lapse by the South Sudan defenders seven minutes to full time gave Burundi’s skipper Hakizimana space to score the equalizer.

Burundi’s coach Gustave Niyonkuru said the two teams played good football and a draw was a good result. “My defenders were a little slow in reacting,” added the coach.

But South Sudan’s coach Simon James Yor said he is happy with the way his players battled. “We played well and we hope to improve as we move on. We need to improve in certain areas,” added the coach whose team will face Somalia on September 25th in the last Group C match.

In the other games played on Saturday Sudan beat Djibouti in the first Group A match played at the Pece War Memorial Stadium in Gulu. Hosts Uganda were held to a 1-1 draw by Eritrea in the second Group A match.
