2021 AFCON QUALIFIERS: South Sudan suffer 1-0 defeat in Malawi

The Bright Star suffered defeat away to Malawi Flames in their opening Group B match in the 2021 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on Wednesday.

South African based Gabadinho Mhango netted the lone goal after 67 minutes at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantye to send Malawi top of the group.

Mhango who features for Orlando Pirates in South Africa picked a cross from Gerald Phiri Jr before beating two defenders and firing past goalkeeper Majak Mawith.

The South Sudan team played a coordinated game, but failed to convert some of the opportunities created.

“We need to go back to the drawing board and sharpen the attack because we miss several chances. But general our system of play was good and the players battled well,” said South Sudan coach Ashu Cyprian Besong after the game.

The second Group B game saw Uganda Cranes picked a vital point away in Burkina Faso after the match ended goalless.

On November 17th South Sudan will host Burkina Faso in Khartoum, Sudan, while Uganda host Malawi at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole in Kampala.
