Can a footballer switch national teams?

Short answer

Yes, but only once and under conditions. A player can switch if he has not played a competitive senior match for his first country, or if he played at most three such matches before turning 21, none at a World Cup or continental finals, and three years have passed since the last one.

Youth matches and senior friendlies never tie a player to a country.
