Big countries produce many footballers, but some smaller nations produce far more than their size suggests. We compared the number of notable footballers in our database with each country's population.

In absolute numbers

Nigeria leads with 1,934 footballers in our database, followed by Algeria and Ghana. Large populations, long football traditions and strong domestic leagues explain the top of the list.

Per million people

Adjusting for population changes the picture: Seychelles produces about 423.7 notable footballers per million inhabitants, the highest rate in Africa, ahead of Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe. Small island nations and countries with large diasporas in Europe often rank highly, because players born abroad with family roots in the country are counted too.

What drives production?

  • Diaspora: countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau benefit from players born in Europe. See the diaspora.
  • Academies: structured youth development in countries like Senegal, Ivory Coast and Ghana; see famous academies.
  • Strong leagues: professional domestic leagues in North Africa and South Africa keep many players at home.

How we count

Our database includes footballers with a Wikidata record who hold an African nationality or have played for an African national team. Coverage is better for players who have played abroad or internationally, so countries with strong but isolated domestic leagues may be under-represented. Population figures come from the World Bank.
