Is the Africa Cup of Nations becoming more defensive? We counted the goals at every edition since 1957.
The trend
Editions before 1990 averaged 2.73 goals per match; since 2000 the average is 2.24. The highest-scoring tournament was 1962 (4.5 goals per match), and the lowest-scoring was 1988 (1.44).
Why scoring has changed
- Fewer mismatches: early tournaments had only a handful of teams and big gaps in quality. Qualifying now filters out weaker sides.
- Tactical organisation: modern coaching and video analysis make teams harder to break down, especially in tense knock-out matches.
- More teams, more caution: with 24 teams since 2019 and four third-placed teams qualifying from the groups, a draw can be enough, which encourages cautious play.
