Africa's World Cup story runs from a single Egyptian appearance in 1934 to Morocco's semi-final in Qatar and an expanded 48-team tournament. These are the milestones.
1934: Egypt open the door
Egypt became the first African team at a World Cup in Italy in 1934, losing 4–2 to Hungary in a straight knock-out format. It would be 36 years before another African nation qualified.
1970s: Morocco, Zaire and Tunisia
Morocco reached Mexico 1970 and earned Africa's first World Cup point with a 1–1 draw against Bulgaria. Zaire became the first team from sub-Saharan Africa to qualify in 1974. In 1978 Tunisia beat Mexico 3–1, the first win by an African team at the finals.
1980s: Algeria shock West Germany, Morocco top their group
Algeria beat West Germany 2–1 in 1982, and Cameroon went home unbeaten after three draws. In 1986 Morocco became the first African side to win a group and reach the knock-out stage.
1990–2010: quarter-finals and a first African host
Cameroon's run to the quarter-finals in 1990, beginning with a 1–0 win over holders Argentina and lit up by 38-year-old Roger Milla, changed how the world saw African football. Senegal matched the feat in 2002 after beating France in the opening match, and Ghana reached the last eight at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the first finals held on the continent, losing to Uruguay on penalties.
2014 and 2022: new highs
Algeria and Nigeria both reached the round of 16 in 2014, the first time two African teams progressed from the group stage. In Qatar in 2022 Morocco went further than any African team before, beating Spain and Portugal on the way to the semi-finals and finishing fourth.
The 48-team era
From 2026 the World Cup has 48 teams, and Africa's allocation rose to nine direct places plus a spot in the intercontinental play-off.
