This morning, 7th April 2025, Yei Joint Star triumphed over Simba FC with a score of 3-1 in the opening match of the South Sudan Women’s League Third Edition, held at Juba National Football Stadium. The event marked the official start of the league, which aims to elevate women’s football in the region.

In attendance were key figures, including Mr. Augustino Maduot, President of the Association, and James Tuto, Director General of Sports at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in Central Equatoria State. Their presence underscores the importance of this initiative and the support for women in sports.

Mr. Maduot remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing women’s football despite ongoing challenges, “With the third edition of the Women’s National League set to feature 12 clubs, the focus is on fostering development and participation in the sport. This initiative aligns with FIFA’s standards, which require a total of 90 matches for the league to qualify for international support.”

“In addition, the association is keen on establishing a league for women under the age of twenty, especially in preparation for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup qualifiers against Djibouti in May. This strategic move underscores the importance of nurturing young talent and providing competitive opportunities for female athletes,” he added.

Maduot emphasized that the future vision includes upgrading the National League to a Premier League, which would elevate the standard of women’s football in South Sudan. The Board of Directors has outlined an ambitious plan aimed at enhancing the overall football landscape, particularly for women, allowing for greater competition within the region.

As the South Sudan Football Association pushes forward, it is clear that the development of women’s leagues is a priority. The commitment to create a robust framework for women’s football will not only benefit the players but also inspire future generations. The association’s efforts signal a positive trajectory, fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment in sports. The work being done will pave the way for South Sudanese women to shine on both national and international stages.

Mrs. Helen Terso, the Women’s Football Development Officer, shared that twelve teams will compete in this year’s league. She emphasized that the tournament is a vital part of the SSFA’s strategic plan to promote equal opportunities for women in football, “This initiative not only showcases the talents of female athletes but also prepares clubs for regional and continental competitions, fostering a competitive spirit.”

As the tournament progresses, it promises to be an exciting showcase of skill and determination. The league is set to conclude on May 31st, with the champion earning the opportunity to represent South Sudan in the prestigious African Women’s Champions League next year.

This is a pivotal moment for women’s football in South Sudan, and the community is rallying behind these talented athletes as they aim for success on both local and international stages. Stay tuned for more updates as the league unfolds and teams battle for glory.
