South Sudan draw defending champions Cameroon, Mali in TotalEnergies AFCON U-17

South Sudan has been placed in a tough group ahead of the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 slated for April 29th to May 19th in Algeria.

The South Sudan team that finished second in the Zonal CECAFA qualifiers have been placed alongside defending champions Cameroon, two time champions Mali and Burkina Faso in Group C.

During the draw conducted in Algiers on Wednesday, the CAF Head of Competitions Division, Khaled Nassar said Group A will be based in Algiers, while Group B and C will be in the cities of Constantine and Annaba respectively.

Both South Sudan and Somalia, the CECAFA representatives will be making their firs appearance in the competition which will also act as a qualifier for the FIFA U-17 World Cup to take place in Peru. The teams that qualify for the semi finals will automatically book places tn the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Somalia, the Zonal champions have been placed in Group A alongside Algeria, Senegal and Congo, while Group B has Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa and Zambia.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) together with several Member Association Presidents also attended the draw. Two legends fron DR Congo, Herita Ilunga and Algeria’s Ibrahim Bekakchi also helped in conducting the draw.

Group A: Algeria, Senegal, Congo, Somalia

Group B: Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa, Zambia

Group C: Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, South Sudan
